HOW TO BUILD A LIBRARY

CAUSE: Empowering Women & Girls, Racial Justice

CATEGORY: Film

PROJECT DIRECTOR: Maia Lekow

HOW TO BUILD A LIBRARY follows two tenacious Kenyan women transforming a dilapidated, junk-filled library in downtown Nairobi into a hub of learning and creativity for the city’s citizens. The protagonists must navigate political and social barriers before they can accomplish their goals of creating a new cultural hub rooted in a physical structure with immense historical weight. HOW TO BUILD A LIBRARY explores a post-colonial identity crisis as it exists for millennials in Kenya today and is shared worldwide: what do we do with this complex history? Erase or remember?
